Sixty years ago, surveys off the coast of Benin wrote the reef off - too deep, too quiet, presumed dead. This week, Benin's own marine scientists published the correction: it is alive [1][2].

Working below 50 meters - the dim 'mesophotic' zone where sunlight fades - a team led by Gerard Zinzindohoue of Benin's fisheries and oceanography research institute flew underwater drones across 11.5 kilometers of seabed and found living coral and a working reef community: at least eight coral types, pending physical sampling to confirm the species, and eight kinds of reef fish, from golden African snappers to Guinean angelfish [1]. The find, published July 20 in Frontiers in Marine Science, is the first confirmed living mesophotic coral ecosystem on the Gulf of Guinea's continental shelf - a first for the region, documented by the region's own scientists with a deep-sea camera system [1][2]. The team's closing question is the hopeful part: 'If we were able to find this reef again after 60 years, how many others are still undocumented?' [2].
