African wild dogs range enormously, which is exactly why they are hard to keep. Four of them have now been confirmed in Kasungu National Park in Malawi - the first sighting there in more than ten years [1].
They came from South Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia, roughly 300 kilometres away, or about 186 miles, crossing villages and farmland to do it [1].
We know that because they were recognised. Matthew Becker, chief executive of the Zambian Carnivore Programme, matched the four against individuals in his database; they had last been recorded in May, near Mfuwe village [1].
'It's very promising the wild dogs were able to move from South Luangwa all the way into Malawi,' Becker said [1]. The animals crossed a landscape full of people and arrived somewhere their species had been absent for a decade.
