Here is what was published. Three people died in the July 26 shooting at the Bite of Seattle festival: Junior Cee Niko Semo, 19; Carlos Israel Sanchez Villalba, 44; and Ashley Whitehead, 56. Four were injured, including a two-year-old boy [1]. All three of the dead were named, from court documents.
The suspect who was not named is fifteen years old. He was arrested and waived his initial court appearance on Monday, and his identity was withheld because he is a juvenile [1].
That is not an editorial decision. Washington seals juvenile court records; police and prosecutors are the ones constrained, and no newsroom can publish a name it has not been given.
There is a further detail in the court documents that the framing misses entirely. Investigators believe the 15-year-old 'and one of the deceased engaged in a gunfight with at least one other unknown suspect' [1].
One of the three people reported as dead is, on the investigators' account, one of the shooters - and he was named.
As for a motive being suppressed: Assistant Chief of Investigations Nicole Powell said publicly, within about a day, that the shooting 'could be gang related' [1].
None of this is a defence of how any particular outlet covered the story. It is the narrower point that the specific mechanism being alleged - a media decision to conceal - is not what happened. The information that exists was released, and the information that was not is sealed by a law about the age of the person it concerns.
