The strongest version of Daniel Turner's argument is worth granting up front: the Strategic Petroleum Reserve was never refilled after 2022, that failure spans two administrations, and holding 331.2 million barrels, the lowest level since 1983, in the fifth month of a war that has closed the Strait of Hormuz is a legitimate emergency. [3] If Thursday's Timcast segment had said that, there would be nothing to correct.

What it said instead was a history with a hole in it. "Biden depleted most of them in 2022," Turner told the panel. "We haven't filled them up. We've depleted a little more since." [1]

The "little more" has a number. In March 2026, as the Iran war drove crude past 80 dollars, the current administration released 172 million barrels from the reserve, the second-largest drawdown in the SPR's history. [2] The largest, the 2022 Biden release the segment leads with, was 180 million. [2] Eight million barrels separate the drawdown Turner names from the one he waves off. A release 96 percent the size of the record is not "a little more." It is the same policy, executed by the administration his framing protects, four months ago.

Both numbers deserve to stand together, because together they are the actual story of the reserve: two administrations, two wars' worth of price pressure, two near-record releases, no refill. The current administration has pledged to buy back roughly 200 million barrels; at this writing that is a pledge. [2]

A second claim needs the record beside it. Reaching for the reserve's glory days, Turner put its Katrina-era holdings at "900 million barrels." [1] The SPR's authorized capacity is about 727 million barrels. It has never held 900 million. [3]

The segment's news relay, we note fairly, was largely sound: the Saudi maritime coalition, the Houthi blockade declared July 20, the reported land-offensive planning all track the primary coverage. [1] The show read the news accurately and then let a guest rewrite the part with a domestic political charge, which is the part a viewer takes to the gas station.

That viewer is the stake. The same episode advised filling garage gas cans against what is coming. Gas is at 4.11 dollars, up 96 cents in a year, and the national emergency cushion is at a 43-year low with a war running. [3] Those facts are alarming enough told straight. Told with the March release deleted, they are not information. They are a campaign ad with a fuel surcharge.
