Nearly 60,000 people have been evacuated near Bordeaux, in what French authorities describe as the country's worst wildfire season since the Second World War. Across southwestern Europe, the season's evacuations total about 330,000. [1][2]

Two pieces of science arrived alongside the smoke, and they deserve to be read with their labels attached.

The first is a rapid attribution analysis from World Weather Attribution, the group that specialises in answering the climate question while an event is still burning. Its finding: human-caused climate change made Spain's extreme fire conditions 20 times more likely, and roughly doubled the likelihood in France. Twenty-six years of warming, on its account, tripled the odds in Spain and raised them 40 percent in France. [2]

That analysis is not peer-reviewed, and PBS's report says so plainly. [2] Rapid attribution is a legitimate and useful method, published on a compressed timeline precisely so the finding exists while the public is paying attention. It is also, by design, work that has not yet been through the process that catches errors.

The second is peer-reviewed, published in Scientific Reports, and its finding is less dramatic and more durable: across Southern Europe, extreme fire-weather days have risen from about 10 a year to about 25, with roughly 50 percent greater intensity. [2] No multiplier, no single-event attribution, just the baseline moving underneath every season.

A doubling of dangerous days is the number that will still be true in five years.

The economic tail is already visible in Bordeaux, where the fires are burning through a region that produces about 700 million bottles of wine a year, in an industry already down 39 percent in US exports because of tariffs. [1] California's 2020 smoke damage cost its wine sector an estimated $3.7 billion, which is the closest available guide to what smoke taint does to a vintage. [1]

The fires are out or they are not by the time this is read. The 25 days a year are the part that does not go out.
