Three girls are in Guatemala without their parents. That is the end of this story, and it is worth putting first, because everything that led there was administrative.
Their father was deported from Missouri. Their mother, whose asylum claim had a hearing scheduled for this year, chose to self-deport and follow him rather than raise the children alone in a country that had taken him. Within two weeks of the family reuniting in Guatemala, both parents were found shot and bound in a sugarcane field. [1]
ICE's public justification for removing him was a criminal record. PBS NewsHour went looking for it.
What the public court files show: a 2024 citation for driving without a license, carrying a fine of roughly $200. A 2010 open-container violation in Palm Beach, Florida, which prosecutors dropped. [1]

That is the whole of the discrepancy, and it needs stating carefully. Absence from the files PBS searched is not proof the charges never existed; records can be sealed, misfiled, or filed under a variation of a name. What it does mean is that the most serious element of the government's public case for this removal could not be confirmed by a news organization that went looking, while the elements that could be confirmed amount to a traffic ticket and a charge the state itself abandoned.
The steel-man for the government: a person without lawful status is removable regardless of criminal history, and ICE was not required to have a serious record to act. Precisely so, and that is the point. The record was offered anyway, because criminal is the word that makes a removal defensible in public. When the word is doing that much work, the documents behind it have to hold.
The asylum claim is the part that will not leave you alone. It had a 2026 hearing date. It was never heard. The mother gave it up to follow her husband, and the family that reunited in Guatemala had, between them, one enforceable American legal protection left, and it expired the moment she crossed the border voluntarily.
The murders themselves remain uninvestigated as far as the public record shows, in a country whose conditions were the substance of the asylum claim nobody ever ruled on.
