Louisiana had no wild whooping cranes between 1950 and 2011. The last of them disappeared from the coastal marsh mid-century; the reintroduction began with ten juveniles released at White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area in Vermilion Parish, fifteen years ago.

This spring, ten chicks fledged in the wild, a record for the program, breaking the eight set in 2022. Eighteen of twenty nesting pairs hatched chicks. The Louisiana flock now stands at 84 birds, of which 32 were hatched in the wild rather than released. [1] Sara Zimorski, the LDWF biologist who oversees the project, offered the least dramatic and most encouraging explanation available: "As the population gets older, we see some of the breeding pairs have more success probably because of experience." [1] The birds are getting better at being parents. That is what a recovering population looks like from the inside.

One precision: this is a record for Louisiana's program. A broader superlative circulated this week and we could not verify it, so we do not print it.

On the other side of the world, Western Sydney has a new national park. Gulguer National Park covers 1,100 hectares, about 700 of them newly acquired and added to existing reserves, which means roughly two-thirds of it is land that was not protected before. It holds at least 28 threatened species, among them the southern greater glider, the powerful owl, the giant burrowing frog, the eastern coastal free-tailed bat, and two land snails found nowhere else, the Cumberland and the Dural. It protects two critically endangered forest types and Aboriginal rock art, artefacts and shelters. Its name comes from the swirling waters of the Nepean River. [2]

Deputy Premier Prue Car put the human case for it: "For too long, families in Western Sydney have missed out on access to outdoor spaces that other parts of the city take for granted." [2]

In the Gulf, meanwhile, something nobody had done before. NOAA divers, breathing rebreathers on decompression dives, outplanted 26 lab-reared mesophotic corals onto artificial domes at 66 meters, and relocated 16 more fragments in the field to start new colonies. The species: Swiftia exserta, Muricea pendula, Thesea nivea, deep-water corals from the twilight zone below where sunlight does much good. In NOAA's own words: "This was the first time divers outplanted lab-reared mesophotic corals, and the first time rebreather divers propagated corals in the water." [3] The same expedition logged dives reaching 72.5 meters, deeper than the outplanting itself.

The money behind it comes from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon settlement, roughly $126 million for the deep-benthic restoration program with another $11.3 million added in 2024. [3] Sixteen years after the spill, the reef is getting hand-planted corals paid for by the company that killed them.

Ten chicks, 700 hectares, 26 corals. None of these is big enough to reverse anything by itself. All three are the kind of thing that only shows up in the numbers years after somebody decided to start.
