Quotation marks make a specific claim: someone said the words. A video uploaded Friday to Benny Johnson's channel is titled "Michelle Obama and Ketanji Brown Jackson Have Psychotic BREAKDOWNS On Eachother: 'We Are Victims!'" [1] We pulled the video's own captions, all 283 of them, and checked. The phrase "We Are Victims" appears nowhere in the video, from either woman, in any form. A targeted search for the phrase in coverage of the underlying podcast episode also returned nothing. [1]
The confrontation does not occur either. The video contains no footage of Michelle Obama and Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson arguing, reacting to each other, or breaking down. What it contains is the host's own voiceover monologue, cut against clips of Justice Jackson calmly discussing her job on Obama's podcast. [1]
The source material underneath is mild to the point of being pleasant. Jackson's longest stretch in the video, at 3:51 to 4:08, is a good-humored comment about moving from a trial court to the Supreme Court: she says she "was always this person on the bench," that the move has "been a bit of an adjustment because as a trial court judge, you have your own courtroom," where "you can go on as long as you want," and that "trying to make sure that my colleagues get to ask some questions has been a challenge for me." [1] That is the closest thing in the video to an admission of anything: a justice saying she talks a lot and is learning to share the bench.
The breakdown language lives somewhere else entirely: in the host's own narration. Between 0:19 and 1:44 it is the host, not either woman, who calls Jackson "stupid," asserts "extremely low IQ," says "the women are yapping," and describes the diversity considerations around the 2022 Supreme Court nomination as "a reversion to blood war, tribal wars between clans and tribes... back to the Stone Age." [1] The title assigns the meltdown to the two women. The transcript locates every degree of the heat in the narrator.
One splice compounds it. A clip at 4:29 to 4:38 shows Jackson at a theater rehearsal, with cheering and the words "Female empowerment," cut back-to-back with the podcast material as if from the same event; nothing in the video establishes that it is. [1]
The steel-man is worth stating cleanly. Commentary about public figures, including harsh and mocking commentary, is protected and common, and this correction takes no position on the host's right to find a justice's podcast appearance ridiculous. An opinion that Jackson talks too much would be an opinion. The title does something categorically different: it manufactures a quotation, with quotation marks, and an event, a two-woman breakdown, that the video's own transcript shows never happened. That is not commentary on the record. It is a counterfeit of it.
The claim is rated false. Nobody in the video says "We Are Victims." No breakdown between Michelle Obama and Justice Jackson appears in it. The record is a calm conversation. The conflict was added in post.
