Cinereous vultures have bred successfully in the wild in Bulgaria's Eastern Rhodope Mountains for the first time since 1993, closing a gap of 33 years [2]. Europe's largest bird of prey spent a full human generation in that landscape as a visitor rather than a resident, present in the sky and absent from the nesting record. The hatchings were reported in the first days of July 2026. The most recent development came after: two surviving juveniles have been fitted with GPS/GSM transmitters at roughly two and a half months old, which puts them near the age of their first flights and puts their movements on a map [3].

The season was assembled pair by pair. Rewilding Europe counted eight pairs of cinereous vultures in the Rhodope rewilding landscape in 2026. Seven of those pairs settled into artificial nests, structures built for the specific purpose of persuading the birds to stay. Four pairs began incubation [1].

What happened next is described differently by the two organisations, and both descriptions belong in the record. Rewilding Europe, writing on July 2, 2026, reports that three chicks hatched [1]. The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, writing on July 1, 2026, reports that three pairs hatched chicks and that two chicks survived to be fitted with transmitters at about two and a half months old [3]. The counts are taken at different moments in the season, one at hatching and one at tagging, and no single figure covers both.

A second apparent discrepancy is not one. The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds gives the gap precisely, 33 years, anchored to 1993 [2]. Rewilding Europe describes it as over 30 years [1]. One figure is exact, the other rounds down, and both point at the same year.

The birds did not find their own way back. A reintroduction programme has put 40 cinereous vultures into the wild since releases began in 2023 [1]. Nest platforms were one part of that work. Food was the other part, and it is the part that takes longest.

Sara Aliacar, a Rewilding Landscape Manager, connected the two. "The hatching of these chicks reflects not only the success of the reintroduction programme, but also years of work to strengthen the food base." [1] Cinereous vultures are scavengers. A landscape that cannot feed them is a landscape they will cross rather than settle in, whatever is built for them there.

Frans Schepers, executive director of Rewilding Europe, filed the result under beginnings. "This exciting news is proof that the re-established cinereous vulture population in the Rhodopes has begun the long road to recovery." [1]

Dobromir Dobrev, a project manager at the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, framed it the same way from the Bulgarian side. "These hatchlings are a sign of hope and the first step towards the return of the cinereous vulture as a breeding species in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains." [2] Both men chose the language of a first step over the language of an achievement, which is a fair reading of the arithmetic.

That arithmetic is worth stating plainly. Eight pairs is not a population that can be left to itself. Seven of those eight nested in structures people put up. Three chicks, or two, depending on the count, is the entire natural production of the Bulgarian Eastern Rhodopes in 2026, set against 40 birds released over three years. A species that vanished from a landscape does not return at the rate it left.

The transmitters are the part of this story still in progress. Two juveniles are carrying units that will report where they go [3]. Where they go is the open question the programme has never been able to answer for Bulgarian-hatched birds, because until this year there were no Bulgarian-hatched birds to follow. Whether they stay in the Rhodopes, whether they return to breed themselves, and whether the eight pairs of 2026 become a self-sustaining colony are all questions the next several years will settle, not this one.

What 2026 settled is narrower and still real. Between 1993 and this year, no cinereous vulture chick hatched in the wild in the Bulgarian Eastern Rhodopes [2]. This year, at least two did, and they are old enough to be wearing transmitters.
