The recall widens a food-safety event that began as a regional cluster into the summer's largest produce-linked parasite outbreak.

Two numbers are circulating, and they count two different things. The outbreak cluster, meaning the illnesses investigators have linked to the recalled Taylor Farms lettuce, stands at 6,358 cases across 15 states, with roughly 300 hospitalizations and two deaths [1]. That figure measures this specific product and this specific supply chain, and nothing else.

The second number is larger and older. The United States has confirmed 10,468 cyclosporiasis cases across 47 states so far in 2026, with 517 hospitalizations, and health agencies are tracking a further 12,255 cases that have not been confirmed [1]. That total is the national background of a parasite that spreads through contaminated fresh produce every summer, most of it never traced to a single source. It is not the same population as the 6,358 tied to the lettuce, and stacking the two into one impression of scale is the mistake to avoid.

The two deaths belong to Michigan, which confirmed them earlier this month as the first United States fatalities recorded in the 2026 outbreak [1]. Those deaths sit inside the outbreak cluster and inside the national total at the same time, because they are the same two people; counting them once, against the lettuce, keeps the scopes from doubling up.

A recall of this breadth removes the implicated product from shelves and kitchens, which is the action that actually ends an exposure. Cyclospora does not pass from person to person, so pulling the contaminated lettuce cuts the transmission line directly rather than relying on anyone changing their behavior.
