Eli Lilly reported $23.0 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2026, up 48 percent from a year earlier, and raised its full-year guidance to a range of $85 billion to $87 billion [1]. That is a record, and it is worth being precise about where it comes from.
Two drugs did most of the work. Mounjaro, Lilly's diabetes injectable, brought in $9.9 billion, up 91 percent. Zepbound, its weight-loss counterpart, brought in $4.9 billion, up 44 percent [1]. Add them and you get $14.8 billion from a single class of medicine, the GLP-1 injectables, which works out to roughly 64 percent of the quarter's total revenue. Nearly two of every three dollars Lilly took in came from those two products.
Reported earnings per share landed at $7.94, up 26 percent [1]. On the top line, the company is growing faster than its own profit-per-share, a sign it is spending as it scales, which is the second half of how the chief executive chose to frame the quarter.
David Ricks, Lilly's chief executive, put it this way: "Lilly's momentum continues, as we delivered 48% revenue growth and raised our full-year guidance. At the same time, Lilly is building for the future" [1]. The building-for-the-future line points at capacity and pipeline, the reinvestment that a company riding a demand wave uses to keep riding it.
Here is the part the growth rate does not say out loud. Revenue is not created inside the company; it is paid to the company. The $14.8 billion that Mounjaro and Zepbound generated in three months is $14.8 billion that patients, employers, and insurers paid for GLP-1 prescriptions at their list prices. A record quarter on Lilly's income statement is a record quarter of drug spending on the other side of the transaction, and the concentration in these two products means the cost is landing heavily on people managing weight and diabetes.
The windfall is real and so is its source. Lilly and its shareholders keep the $23.0 billion. The people who fund it are the ones filling the prescriptions, and the ones priced out of them are not in these numbers at all.
