The contiguous United States has been keeping systematic temperature records since 1895. In those 132 years, no month has averaged warmer than July 2026: 76.9 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 3.3 degrees above the 20th-century average [1]. The margin over the old benchmarks is small and real, 0.1 to 0.2 degrees over July 1936, the Dust Bowl summer, and July 2012 [1]. Records this old do not fall by whole degrees; they fall by tenths, and this one fell.
The decomposition is where the story lives, and it is worth showing the arithmetic. A daily average temperature is built from a high and a low. July's daytime highs averaged 89.5 degrees, 2.9 above average, which ranks sixth-warmest, hot, historically notable, not a record [1]. July's overnight lows averaged 64.2 degrees, 3.7 above average, which is the warmest on record [1]. The month did not set its all-time mark because afternoons were unprecedented. It set the mark because nights were: the low-temperature anomaly beat the high-temperature anomaly by eight tenths of a degree.
That gap is not a statistical curiosity. Nighttime lows are the recovery number. When nights cool, bodies shed the day's heat load, and homes without air conditioning become survivable; heat deaths concentrate where and when that reset fails. A record built on overnight warmth is the version of a heat record with the highest human cost per tenth of a degree, which is why it deserves the lead over the rounder headline number.
The state-level extreme was Wyoming, which recorded its warmest July and warmest month of any kind, 5.1 degrees above average and 0.9 degrees clear of its previous July record from 2007 [1]. A 0.9-degree jump over a prior record is, by the standards of century-long climate series, an enormous margin.
The same month was breaking records on the other side of the Atlantic, measured by a different instrument system. Data from Copernicus, the EU's climate service, reported by Euronews, puts nearly 120 million Europeans in areas that logged their hottest July ever recorded [2]. Globally, July averaged 1.47 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline [2]. France ran 3.8 degrees Celsius above its 1991-2020 normal, and western Europe's combined June-July average of 21.62 degrees Celsius beat the previous benchmark set in 2022 [2]. The heat did not respect the Mediterranean's southern shore either: ten Sahel-region countries, including Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Kenya, and Ethiopia, broke their monthly heat records for July, with Chad and Sudan running more than 2 degrees Celsius above the 1981-2010 average [2].
The secondary tolls are already countable. In the Gironde, in southwestern France, fires burned nearly 42,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of more than 220,000 people [2]. In Spain's Avila province, almost 44,000 hectares burned [2]. Between the two provinces, that is roughly 86,000 hectares, an area larger than New York City, burned in a single month's fires.
Samantha Burgess of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, which runs the Copernicus climate service, put the attribution plainly: "This is a clear example of how climate change is intensifying heat extremes, with heat and drought increasingly reinforcing one another" [2]. The two datasets behind this piece are independent of each other, one a 132-year US station record, the other a global reanalysis, and they described the same July. One continent's record month can be weather. The same month setting records on two continents, led in the US case by the nighttime number, is the trend line poking through the noise.
