In a plaza in Valencia on Wednesday evening, a little after half past eight, the light went strange and then it went away. For the length of a held breath, the sun over eastern Spain vanished behind the moon, and a country that had not stood in that shadow since 1905 stood in it again [2]. The total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026 had arrived.
The shadow had been traveling for more than an hour. It touched down across northern Russia, crossed Greenland and Iceland, then swept over Spain and a small part of Portugal [1]. About 15 million people stood somewhere in the path of totality, the narrow band where the sun disappears completely, according to Al Jazeera, while a far larger number, close to 980 million, or nearly one in eight people on Earth, could see the sun at least partly covered [1].
For Spain this was the first total eclipse since 1905, a gap of 121 years [2]. Farther north the wait had been longer still. PBS reported that Iceland saw its first total eclipse since 1954, and that for Reykjavik it was the first visible from the capital since 1433, a span of nearly six centuries [3].
How long the dark lasted depended entirely on where you stood, and the outlets covering it do not fully agree, which is a fact worth keeping straight rather than smoothing over. Al Jazeera put the maximum at about two minutes and 18 seconds, out over the water off Iceland's west coast [1]. PBS clocked Reykjavik at roughly one minute and 45 seconds [3]. By the time the shadow reached Spain the window narrowed: CBS News described totality there as about a minute or less [2], while Al Jazeera reported up to 110 seconds in the northern and eastern cities of Leon, Valladolid, Zaragoza, Teruel and Valencia, depending on the exact spot [1]. The figures differ because the geometry does, and each is true for its own patch of ground.
The one instruction every astronomer repeated was about the eyes. "To look at the sun, you must always use proper protection, and the most suitable protection is eclipse glasses," said Telmo Fernandez Castro, director of the Madrid Planetarium [3]. The filters block the solar radiation that can damage sight, the small price of admission to a couple of minutes of daytime night.
The wonder came with fine print. Totality is a matter of a clear sky, and clouds over any stretch of the path could turn a once-in-a-lifetime moment into a gray afternoon for the people beneath them. Most of the planet was never in the running: the overwhelming majority of the world saw a partial eclipse or nothing at all, and even Madrid and Barcelona sat just outside the band of totality, with more than 99 percent coverage but not the full blackout [1]. The precise seconds, as noted, remain a point of honest disagreement across the coverage.
Still, for the roughly 15 million who happened to be standing in the right narrow ribbon of Russia, Greenland, Iceland and Spain [1], the sky did something on Wednesday it had not done there in living memory, and in Reykjavik's case in nobody's living memory at all. The person in that Valencia plaza, glasses on, watching the evening go dark a little after half past eight, was seeing what their city last saw more than a century ago [2]. Wednesday was the day to look up.
