Every month seems to arrive labeled a record. July 2026, according to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, was not, at least not for the air. It was the joint-second warmest July on record for global surface temperature, and the distinction is worth getting right.

The global average surface temperature for July 2026 was 16.90 degrees C, which Copernicus reports as "0.67 degrees C above the 1991-2020 average for July and 1.47 degrees C above the estimated 1850-1900 pre-industrial average for the month" [1]. That second number, 1.47 degrees C of warming since the pre-industrial era, is the one that matters for the climate targets governments signed.

On the ranking, Copernicus is precise. "July 2026 was only marginally cooler than July 2024, by 0.01 degrees C. Given this small difference, the two months are considered the joint-second warmest Julys on record, behind the record set in July 2023 (16.95 degrees C, or 0.72 degrees C above average)" [1]. July 2023 still holds the top of the July table; 2026 shares second place with 2024.

The record July 2026 did set is in the water. "The average sea surface temperature (SST) across the extrapolar ocean (60 degrees S-60 degrees N) was 20.96 degrees C in July 2026, the highest value recorded for the month," Copernicus reports, a figure that "exceeded the previous July record of 20.89 degrees C, set in 2023" [1].

That is the story a fast headline tends to miss. The air was joint-second; the ocean was first. A warmer sea surface is not a footnote to the air temperature: it loads energy into the systems that spin up tropical storms and stresses the marine life that lives near the surface. The honest ledger for July 2026 reads the same either way you slice it, near-record heat, one genuine record, and it is in the ocean.
